Review: "Ant-Man" The movie

Who would have thought! Out of all the comics they could have chosen, they  decided to make Ant-Man into a movie. And boy, did they do it right!

Ant-Man is one of those things I don’t exactly look forward to when seeing a movie. Which, I guess, has helped me to love this movie so much that I have already seen it three times now. Bless the cinema!

I wasn’t expecting much of the plot. I didn’t know much about Ant-Man before the movie came out. I had seen the trailers, the promos and the pictures and expected it to be a funny thing. Which I was right about, by the way! As you see in the trailer, which has some of the funniest moments from the movie, you can see that they’re not afraid to make it look as rediculous as some expect it to be, e.g. in the last bit of one of the trailers where the tiny Thomas the Tank Engine is knocked over. This type of humor rules the entire movie, which is one of the many things I love about it. Go see it if you haven’t seen the trailer yet!

Not only is the humor great, the other emotions were very strong in this movie. There are a couple of sad moments, a couple of happy moments and also some unsure or insecure moments, even. I had not seen much of Paul Rudd’s acting before seeing Ant-Man (of course there is The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Friends and Parcs and Recreations, but I had not seen much more than that) and I’m being very honest with you if I really loved everything about his acting. His face, his body language, his voice, it was just complete.

Of course a movie can’t have good things only. This minor detail that slightly set me off is the Marvel-logo. As a Marvel adorer/IntenseFanWhoNeedsToGetALife, I was just kind of shocked that they played music that doesn’t quite fit the standard Marvel intro. It fits with the movie and the way everything plays out, but I just couldn’t like it at the time.

If I have not yet made it clear how much I like this movie, let me tell you about the characters. Scott (Paul Rudd) takes on the Ant-Man title and trains with Hope (Evangeline Lily) to master his strengths, know his weaknesses and to ‘master’ the ants (yes, you heard me! He even has a flying ant named Antony!) in order to accomplish the big, big mission at the end of the movie. In these training sessions, there are so many emotions like happiness and courage and also sadness, that their characters are really being explored and there is no possible way to not love them. It all seems to happen so naturally and it really almost makes me proud of those characters.

With the hints towards what may happen in the future (Wasp! Mid-credits scene) and what Ant-Man’s part is in the upcoming Marvel movies (after-credits scene), I can only say that I am super-excited to see more of Ant-Man and to see Ant-Man collaborate with the other Marvel characters.

One last thing I really need to mention. Anna Akana’s cameo! If you haven’t seen the movie yet and you like Anna Akana (YouTuber), go see the movie and feel as proud as I was when I saw her face on the big screen! Yay, Anna! You made it!
