My 2024 favourites

For me, 2024 was chaos. How I have managed to still read 20 books is a mystery to me. Let’s get into my favourites of the year! I’ve read books across all genres so this list is going to be an interesting mix.

1. Fourth Wing – Rebecca Yarros

LISTEN! PLEASE! Don’t hate me, okay. I was pretty late to this hype and I was super skeptical. I’ve been reading romance books, YA books and fantasy books for a while now. And when a book gets hyped like this one did, it usually disappoints. HOWEVER! This one did not disappoint. I can honestly say it lived up to the hype and I devoured it in literal days. Dragons, challenges, VERY hot dudes… call me anytime. I’m usually not a thick book girlie but damn, this one delivered. I totally get if this is not your cup of tea, but I loved it a lot. I’m currently fighting my wat through the second book of the series which is a lot harder to get through…

2. The Serpent & The Wings of Night – Carissa Broadbent

Can we pretend for a minute that this page will not be filled by fantasy smut because… damn! You can really tell I got hooked on Romantasy in 2024. And if there’s another book that you have to read and is not Fourth Wing, please read The Serpent & The Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent. Sexy vampires participating in something that can only be described as something that is super similar to The Hunger Games. That’s all you need, really, to get hooked on this story. Don’t be fooled: these are not your typical Twilight vampires…

3. Just For the Summer – Abby Jimenez

The perfect summer book yet I read it during the fall. I hadn’t read anything by Jimenez before but I’ve always heard great things about her books. I picked the book up randomly at a bookstore and just started reading without knowing anything about it. It went in blank. And damn it was good! I love how nuanced her storytelling was: detailed, yet not too much. There was a specific vibe, but not too overwhelming. I would not be able to describe it in one single word. The characters were developed very well, even the side characters. It tells a love story but it also tells the story of a young woman learning how her past influences her every decision in life and love. Absolutely worth a read and I can’t wait to read more by this author!

4. With the Fire on High – Elizabeth Acevedo

Elizabeth Acevedo is a true magician when it comes to words. You can find my review of Clap When You Land (her third book) here, I reviewed it a few years ago. With the Fire on High is her second book and I must say I think I liked it even more than Clap When You Land. The book is written in prose, and tells the story of a young girl that gets pregnant, has her baby and lives with her grandmother, while also chasing the dream of becoming a chef. She has a special talent that not gets unnoticed, but between taking care of her baby, making sure her baby daddy doesn’t gets his fair share of time with their child and school, there’s only so much Emoni can do to keep the fire inside her burning.

5. All Fours (Dutch version) – Miranda July

Not one of my favorites, but still needs a mention on this list, as this was by far the most insane story I read in 2024. It contains a lot of 18+ content and it’s not for the weak, but damn it was interesting. It tells the story of a women leaving her husband and son for a road trip, only to exit the freeway right away and checking into a motel where she lives a second life. This story absolutely pushes boundaries and it is not the typical read I would recommend on this website, but still, it’s worth a try if you want to read something you’ve probably never read before. It’s been a favorite to many last year.
