So, what have we done this weekend? Binge-watch Marvel’s Luke Cage on Netflix. That’s right, the third show that will lead up to The Defenders has been online since September 3.
What about this show? Easter Eggs. Honestly, when I watch a show and I spot something, a reference to anything else in the Marvel universe, either cinematic or comic related, I get so happy. So here are some references that I’ve spotted while watching season 1 of Marvel’s Luke Cage. Spoilers, yes.
- “I’m not for hire” is what our brave man says in the first episode. While this just comes naturally as dialogue in the show, the comics have shown the opposite of what Cage says. The first comics to belong to Luke Cage himself have the tagline “Luke Cage, Hero for Hire” so yeah, that’s definitely something.
- Pop’s and Luke are just chilling, discussing whatever Luke should do with his life, then Pop’s calls him “Power Man”. Guess what? That was the name Cage went by in the 70’s.
- There was no direct cursing in the comics, which Cage specifically picked up in the series. While every other bad man in the show curses here and there, Cage takes Pop’s swear jar very seriously and verbally makes up curse words as he does in the comics.
- Rafael Scarfe, Misty’s law enforcement partner, is exactly what he is in the comics. I won’t spoil too much about it, but those who have seen past episode 3 know what I mean.
- Stan Lee! Although he doesn’t make a physical appearance, his face sure is in the show. He has been portrayed as the same character in all three Netflix shows so far. In Luke Cage we see him on a poster outside
when Luke stops a robbery in a convenience store. - The colors of Luke’s hoodie and the opening logo are a direct reference to his outfit in the comics. Wearing the black and yellow colors is something I highly approve of.
