Storyline
Lord Grantham sees his family heritage, especially the grand country home Downton Abbey, as his mission in life. The death of his heir aboard the Titanic means distant cousin Matthew Crawley, a Manchester lawyer, suddenly is next in line and accepts moving onto the vast estate with his even more modernist, socially engaged mother, who clashes with his lordship’s domineering, conservative mother, the dowager countess. Marrying off the daughters is another concern. Meanwhile, the butler presides over a staff which serves the family, but also lead most of their entire lives in the servants’ quarters, intriguing amongst themselves. (IMDb)

My Opinion:

So, we’re taking a break from all the Marvel stuff and take a lot at a more ‘grown up’ series: Downton Abbey.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen this series (Netflix won’t update ARGH), but let me tell you, it is wonderful. I mean all the English drama, Maggie Smith, the costumes, the accents, MAGGIE SMITH.

Also the series just ended so I need a way to process my loss and I think this is the way.

So the story is: there is no story. I mean if you look at it, nothing really happens. There is no continueing storyline as in most other series or films, but that does not mean there isn’t any drama.

Cause there is, trust me.

Nobody seems to be happy with anythign in their lives and they try to voice this through using the most British way possible. As a hella classy elite Brit, you can’t just complain out and loud and certainly not in this era. So what other way than to be super-sarcastic, lowkey rebelling and making the greatest witty comments ever?

The first season starts of with a death (which is one of the most intense things to happen throughout the entire series) which the classy Brits try their best to cover up. Other than seeing the troubles of the elites, the series also gives a glimp of the servants’ life. Which is also filled with drama. This series is filed under drama. This series is the epitome of drama.

So there is this really hot guy, Thomas Barrow, and he is the most badass, don’t give a shit, character in the show. I mean yeah he is mean, but he knows what he’s doing.

(He starts breaking down halfway through the series and you’ll get a much more personal look into his character and you will cry. trust me.)

Most characters really don’t. Except Sybil (who is also extremely beautiful). She is a feminist (which in itself is a very good thing), but she stands up for her beliefs in a time where that stuff was not. Done. And also in one episode SHE WEARS TROUSERS. She also plans to runaway with what is their coachman (he is Irish, so another amazing accent), which is totally cute, and in general is just very awesome. And the you can see the transformations in the heads of the house as well. Where Robert and Elizabeth started of as stuck-up, emotionless people, they slowly transform into people who really care about their staff and do things that actually help them! Another great thing is the incorporation of historical events. You can see the impact that the First World Wars has, but not in the standard documentary way, but how it affects the lives of regular people from all parts of society.

And ofcourse, the actual star of the show, Maggie Smith. Maggie plays the part of fancy af mother of Countess Mary Crawley. Her remarks are pure gold.

So the good news of all this is that the show is on Netflix ! It has six seasons ! With, like, 9 episodes each season ! Christmas Specials ! Go watch it and just enjoy that there is nothing really happening, but it is still amazing. The costumes, the scenery, the locations, the decor, the jazz-music, and the acting and the characters who just find their way into your heart !
