So as I’m writing this I’m way to excited for the second movie in this epic trilogy that is coming out this thursday. Especially when I think about the fact that I’m going to see the first and the second movie, this wednesday night in the cinema together with DutchBookChick Nanouk. I absolutely love the books and have to confess that I saw this movie before I’ve read the books which I don’t normally do. With this one I’m glad that I did, because the book is a little different from the movie, and with this movie I’m completely fine with it.
Thomas wakes up in an elevator, remembering nothing but his own name. He emerges into a world of about 60 teen boys who have learned to survive in a completely enclosed environment, subsisting on their own agriculture and supplies. A new boy arrives every 30 days. The original group has been in “The Glade” for three years, trying to find a way to escape through the Maze that surrounds their living space. They have begun to give up hope. Then a comatose girl arrives with a strange note, and their world begins to change. There are some great, fast-paced action scenes, particularly those involving the nightmarish Grievers who plague the boys. IMDB
So this young adult dystopia is in my opinion different from the ones like The Hunger Games and Divergent. The maze in this story has been designed to figure out a cure for the Flare, which is a virus that is caused by the sun which has moved to close to the earth. The cure is needed so that no one can die off this horrible virus anymore. The thing is the Gladers (the maze inhabitants) don’t know this since their memories have been wiped completely apart from knowing their names and just basic information. With the coming of Thomas in the maze the whole system is on edge and they want to find a way out of the maze. That’s all I can say about the plot of this movie without spoiling it.
So I have to admit that I haven’t seen this movie in the cinema (which thankfully is about to change) and I have to say that the quality on a tv screen is so different from watching it in the cinema. I mean movies are made for the big screen so that’s why most of the times they are at their best quality in the cinema. Graphics, sound etcetera all comes together here. I have to say that I was impressed with the way this movie has been shot. The scenery in the maze is absolutely impressive and huge, I mean I wouldn’t want to have to survive in that maze, it’s way to big for me as a tiny person.
The casting of this movie was interesting because I really only knew Dylan O’Brien because his face is the centre off attention on Tumblr because of Teen Wolf. Off course I knew Thomas Brodie-Sangster from Love Actually and Game of Thrones, and the lovely Kaya Scodelario from the British teen series Skins. All the other actors are mostly unknown or have a familiar face. The casting was very good though, all the actors played very convincing and believable. It’s nice to see a fairly unknown cast doing so good and I can’t wait for the next movie The Scorch Trials to come out.
