In September there’s a new movie starring Johnny Depp coming out (Black Mass). This is the reason why I decided to watch Mortdecai, the latest movie starring Johnny Depp. I have to admit that I’m not very fond of his latest works, although he is a brilliant actor. However since the movie is based on a novel (which I haven’t read btw) I decided to give it a try.

Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold. IMDB

So in this movie Johnny Depp is once again playing an unusual role. tBS9M0oXLord Charlie Mortdecai is an English art dealer with a terrible moustache (see close-up on the right). Luckily I’m not the only one who things this moustache is terrible, so does his wife. I remember her saying; “You look like you have a vagina on your face”. Apart from his horrendous moustache, he is also bit of a stuck up and very prudish. Everything he thinks he cannot do, or is just to gross for his liking, he lets his bodyguard Jock handle it for him. But off course it wouldn’t be a movie if one of the latest scenes shows him doing a heroic deed.

The funny thing about Johnny Depp playing an eccentric English art dealer, really reminded me of his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. Sometimes the British accent was so very like Captain Jack that it confused me a tiny bit. This is also because I really, really love Pirates of the Caribbean. (Btw there’s a new POTC coming out in 2017, exciting times!)

Like I said before I don’t think his latest roles are very good. I much rather prefer seeing him in Edward Scissorhands, Chocolat, Finding Neverland, Pirates of the Caribbean etc. Though this movie wasn’t that terrible, however I just couldn’t concentrate while watching this movie. I kept checking my messages, my Tumblr, my twitter etc. In my opinion that isn’t such a good sign, because when I really like a movie I’m really immersed in the story. That just wasn’t happening here. The overall movie just wasn’t that good and the acting could have been way better.

In a nutshell:
Liked:
It was okay.
Loved it: I’m not in love with it.
Re-watch: Maybe if there’s nothing else on the TV!
Cinema worthy: No not really.

    • Ik moet zeggen; ik heb me kostelijk vermaakt in de bios en vond de film hilarisch, maar dat kwam ook door iemand in de zaal die een vreemd lachje had… Anyway, ik ben het er mee eens, het is een slechte film 😉
