First of all, I’ve never finished the Fallen series, because… well, I have no good reason, actually. I still have to read the third and fourth book. As you know, the Fallen series is what made Lauren Kate so damn famous. The books are gonna be turned into a movie next year (there are a lot of rumors and I will NOT talk about that in this post). This is about “Teardrop”, the first book in a new series that Lauren Kate is writing.
The publishing date wasn’t the best because it was the same day as Allegiant, the last book in the Divergent series. I read that first, because I NEEDED to know how it ended. As soon as I’d finished Allegiant, I ordered Teardrop because I was damn curious. The cover is soooo beautiful and I decided to buy the UK hardcover edition (because that was cheaper and the cover was almost the same as the US edition, I didn’t exactly care).
This book got me captivated from the first page. Eureka’s mom died in a weird accident and she got depressed and suicidal. She even tried to kill herself, because she was in the accident too and her mom died when she lived. That’s basically what she tells us in the beginning of the book. I just loved how this fantasy book started off as a completely ‘normal’ novel about a girl who needed to overcome her struggles. Her feelings were described very well; even though they sometimes were a bit strange, I could totally relate to them. Lauren Kate just wrote down what Eureka thought; raw and honest.
Eureka has SOME friends, but since the accident and the failed suicide attempt, she doesn’t have a lot of friends left. Her stepmother doesn’t make her life any easier, but she know that she is just trying to do what she thinks is best for Eureka. I just love how she hates all the psychs she’s seeing. The one thing I couldn’t totally relate to was why she trusted the old lade so fast. But I am not gonna spoil anything, so lets just take a look at what Goodreads says about Teardrop:
Never, ever cry… Seventeen-year-old Eureka won’t let anyone close enough to feel her pain. After her mother was killed in a freak accident, the things she used to love hold no meaning. She wants to escape, but one thing holds her back: Ander, the boy who is everywhere she goes, whose turquoise eyes are like the ocean. And then Eureka uncovers an ancient tale of romance and heartbreak, about a girl who cried an entire continent into the sea. Suddenly her mother’s death and Ander’s appearance seem connected, and her life takes on dark undercurrents that don’t make sense. Can everything you love be washed away?
[Some minor spoilers]
So, what I didn’t get was the cover: the whole book was about Eureka and trying to handle her life, when suddenly Ander is there telling her about her tears and stuff that doesn’t exist and she’s like: okay. cool. And that’s in the end of the book. For me, it was naturally, but it took a little bit too long. But I gotta be honest: I couldn’t wait to read about Ander again and again and again. The prologue made me wonder about his family and his struggles.
Honestly, my favorite character was Ander. He obviously LOVES Eureka. But he’s kinda weird and not honest and he holds things back and somehow I know he’s lying sometimes. And Eureka must know too, she just doesn’t want to see it. She trusts him too fast. But it’s a YA book so that shouldn’t be weird, right?
And the tear? Well, her tears are magical. They hold the power to destroy the world by flooding it. Ander knows, but Eurake doesn’t. Until one of the last pages. Then she finds out her tears are actually dangerous. I loved the fact that this book was about Atlantis, but not TOO much. She found her mother’s old book about Atlantis and Ander’s family is against Atlantis. That’s kind off a Romeo/Juliet story. Definitely something Lauren Kate loves to write about!
And as in every YA fantasy/sci-fi movie, the guy had to choose between the girl and the world. Wanna know what Ander choose? Than you gotta read the book. Really, you should!
I gotta tell you, that even though people are complaining about the fact that Teardrop isn’t the new Fallen, this book is amazing! It’s romantic, deep and exciting! Lauren Kate did such a great job and I can’t wait to meet her this Friday! Only three more days, you hear me screaming?
